Bio

     Mike Bartrum brings a championship pedigree, deep regional roots, & a relentless standard of excellence to the University of Rio Grande as Head Football Coach.
     A Meigs High School graduate, Bartrum is proudly from southeast Ohio. His return to the region represents a full-circle moment, bringing elite experience back home to build something meaningful for Gallia County & beyond.
     Bartrum is a Marshall University Hall of Famer (2007) & one of the most prolific tight ends in Thundering Herd history. After suffering a knee injury that cost him the 1990 season, he rebounded to earn All-Southern Conference honors in 1991 & 1992 and All-America recognition during Marshall’s 1992 NCAA Division I-AA National Championship run. That season, he caught 62 passes with nine touchdowns. He was also a relief pitcher for the Marshall baseball team. Bartrum earned his Bachelor of Arts from Marshall in 1993, was a four-year Dean’s List honoree, a member of the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll, & the Thundering Herd’s Scholar Athlete of the Year as a senior.
     Bartrum played 13 seasons in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs, Green Bay Packers, New England Patriots, & Philadelphia Eagles. A versatile tight end & long snapper, he caught six career touchdown passes, appeared in two Super Bowls (1997 & 2005), & was selected to the 2005 Pro Bowl. From 2004–06, he also served as a Union Representative for the NFL Players Association.
     Following his playing career, Bartrum devoted himself to service & development in his home community. He spent 10 years with the Meigs Local Enrichment Foundation & nine years as a Meigs County Commissioner. He founded the Meigs Flag Football League in 2007, expanding access to the game for youth in the region. On the coaching side, he began at Meigs as the assistant 8th-grade coach before serving as head coach for seven seasons. He later coached in the NFL as the Assistant Tight Ends Coach for the Philadelphia Eagles & returned to Marshall Football in 2021.
     Coach Bartrum’s vision at Rio Grande is centered on culture, toughness, & opportunity. He is committed to building a program that reflects hard work, family, & purpose while giving young men a platform to grow on & off the field. Under his leadership, Rio Grande Football is being built from the ground up with a championship standard.
