RIO GRANDE, Ohio – A former National Basketball Association head coach and a key member of Rio Grande's 2003 men's soccer national championship team headline the four newest members of the University of Rio Grande Athletic Hall of Fame.
Bernie Bickerstaff, Steven Kehoe, Jenny Olding and Matt Powell comprise the 2013 class, which will be inducted during ceremonies on Saturday, Nov. 16, as part of Homecoming activities on the URG campus.
Bickerstaff, now an assistant coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers, has been a head coach with five NBA franchises - Seattle Supersonics (1985-90), Denver Nuggets (1994-96), Washington Bullets (1997-99), Charlotte Bobcats (2004-07) and Los Angeles Lakers (2012-13). His collegiate playing career began at Rio Grande.
Kehoe, now a professor of sports medicine and exercise physiology at Bangor University in Wales, was a three-time NAIA All-American and was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2003 NAIA men's soccer tournament when the RedStorm captured the national title.
Olding, who currently resides in Tampa, Fla., where she is a lifestyle change strategist, was among the best to ever take to the softball diamond for Rio Grande. She was a three-time first team All-America Mideast Conference selection for then-head coach David Pyles and was a second team All-AMC pick as a freshman.
Powell, who is the vice president and chief commercial officer for Ormet Aluminum Corporation, was a men's basketball standout and ranks second on the school's all-time scoring list behind only Bevo Francis with 2,367 career points.
"The Athletic Hall of Fame is an outstanding showcase of the Rio Grande spirit, and the 2013 Class is as accomplished and worthy as any we have ever inducted," said Rio Grande Director of Alumni Relations Annette Ward. "These four individuals not only excelled within their athletic disciplines and were true champions of character during their days at Rio, but each has also carried those same characteristics throughout their personal and professionals lives."
The induction banquet wraps up a busy weekend and follows the conclusion of the Bevo Francis Invitational basketball tournament. The banquet is slate to begin at 6:30 p.m., with the formal program scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
Bickerstaff started at point guard in each of his first two seasons for the Redmen men's basketball team from 1961-62, averaging 13 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals per contest.
A native of Benham, Kentucky, Bickerstaff concluded his collegiate career at the University of San Diego, where he also became an assistant coach in 1968 and later spent three seasons as the school's head coach.
In 1973, Bickerstaff joined the NBA's Washington Bullets (now Wizards) as an assistant coach. In addition to his coaching stops in the NBA, he also served numerous front office capacities throughout his career, most notably as president and general manager for Denver when the Nuggets became the first No. 8 seed in league history to upset top seed in the first round of the 1994 playoffs.
Kehoe was a three-time All American (2001-03), a four-time All-Region First Team selection (2000-03), a four-time All American Mideast Conference First Team pick (2000-03) and three-time team captain, who finished with a career record as a collegian of 81-6-6.
Kehoe signed to play for the United Soccer Leagues' Pittsburgh Riverhounds for one season before returning to Rio as an assistant coach for the 2004-05 season.
Olding started all 186 games from 2003-06 and finished with a career .419 batting average. She also talled 26 home runs, 61 doubles, 15 triples, 158 runs scored and 170 runs batted in.
Olding also was named to the NAIA All-Region IX Team and an All-America Mideast Conference Scholar Athlete as a junior and senior.
Powell graduated from Rio in 1995. He was an honorable mention All-American in 1992-93 after averaging 23.5 points per game and was also a two-time All-District (1993-95) honoree.
Powell shot over 43 percent from three-point range as a co-captain his senior season (1994-95).
