Rio's Bowman earns MSC Player of the Week
Louisville, Ky. --- University of Rio Grande RedStorm senior shortstop Amber Bowman is the Mid-South Conference Softball Player of the Week, for the week ending April 23.
The conference's weekly award is the first of the season for Bowman and the first for a Rio player this season.
Bowman hit .571 (8-for-14) with a home run and nine runs batted in last week to earn MSC Player of the Week honors. The Hebron, Ohio native hit safely in each of the RedStorm's four games, including a pair of two-hit games and a three-hit game -- all Rio victories.
Bowman scored seven runs last week helping her team out-score their opponents, 31-3. She also recorded two doubles, a triple and amassed a 1.071 slugging percentage.
This season, Bowman is hitting .367, which is 11th in the MSC. Her 33 RBI's rank ninth in the conference and her 10 doubles and two triples each are tied for sixth in the MSC.
Rio Grande head coach Dawnjene DeLong was pleased that Bowman earned the weekly accolade. "Amber Bowman is a great senior leader for our team," DeLong said. "She is very deserving of this honor."
"I'm surprised she did not already win the award this season," she added. "I am delighted to see her win this award and also have a great senior season."
With last week's wins, Rio Grande improves to 21-19 overall and wrapped up the MSC East Division with a 14-10 record. Rio is the No. 1 seed from the East Division in the MSC Tournament coming up later this week.
