Rio's Sullivan earns MSC Pitcher of the Week
LOUISVILLE, Ky. --- University of Rio Grande senior hurler Desmond Sullivan has been named the Mid-South Conference Pitcher of the Week.
Sullivan fired his third career no-hitter to earn the honor, his first this season and the first MSC award for any Rio player in 2011.
The native of Scarborough, Ontario fanned eight batters and walked only two in a 3-0 win over Pikeville College, April 2. He also picked up a one-pitch save to preserve a 7-5 win over the Bears on Sunday. Sullivan also pitched in relief against Otterbein University in non-conference action and allowed one run.
For the week, Sullivan totaled 8 1/3 innings of one-hit, one-run baseball, striking out 10 batters and walking two.
Sullivan is 6-3 on the season with a 2.10 earned run average with 75 strikeouts, which leads the MSC and is third in the NAIA. Sullivan ranks at the top of the conference in strikeouts per nine innings (10.5) and innings pitched (64 1/3).
Rio Grande head coach Brad Warnimont was pleased for Sullivan. "Des is certainly very deserving of the honor. He had an outstanding week," Warnimont said. "Since his first two games this season he has pitched extremely well, he's really been locked in and when he's on, he's very tough and I think that showed this past week."
"We're very happy for Des and proud of him for what he has been able to accomplish," Warnimont added. "We hope he can keep it up, because he will be very important for us down the stretch of the season."
Rio Grande is 26-16 on the season and boasts an 11-7 record in the MSC's East Division, which places them in first place.
Sullivan and the rest of his RedStorm teammates will next be in action on Saturday, April 9 at West Virginia Tech. Game one of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. Stretch Internet will have play-by-play coverage.
