Rio Grande --- The University of Rio Grande RedStorm baseball team, ranked No. 25 in the NAIA preseason Top 25 poll, swept a doubleheader from NCAA Division III foe Franciscan University in the home openers on Saturday afternoon at Bob Evans Field. Rio took game one, 11-0 and won, 4-1 in game two, which was a no-hitter by sophomore southpaw Ken Anderson.
Rio Grande (5-8) received another great pitching effort from sophomore Eric Ford (Chagrin Falls, OH) in the opening game win. Ford (2-0) pitched five shutout innings, striking out eight and walking one. Sophomore Mark Parent (New Albany, OH) pitched the last two innings and fanned three.
Senior Michael Lynch (Cleveland, OH) led the RedStorm offense, going 2-for-3 with two RBI's. Senior first baseman Francisco Ramirez (Columbus, OH) went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and pair of RBI. Sophomore designated hitter Shane Spies (Polk, OH) was 1-for-3 with a double and also knocked in two runs.
"Ford continues to impress. He threw the ball well and we were able to get some key hits," said Rio Grande head coach Brad Warnimont. "They (Franciscan) were a lot better."
In game two, Anderson (1-0), a lefty from Charleston, SC, was the star of the game, firing a no-hitter. The first no-hitter for Rio Grande since Desmond Sullivan last March 21 against West Virginia Tech.
Anderson carried a perfect game into the fifth inning. He walked two and allowed an unearned run. He fanned six and walked three in the game.
"Really happy for Kenny, he threw a gem, really threw the ball well," Warnimont said. "He was perfect through four, walked a couple in the fifth and a run scored on an error. He was able to stay with it and get the no-no."
Rio scored four runs in the first inning and Anderson made it stand up. Sophomore second baseman Kyle Perez (Casselberry, FL) led the offense, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Senior Dominick McAllister (Columbus, OH) was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI and junior catcher Brian Suerdick (Dayton, OH) was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Rio Grande will host Miami-Hamilton on Sunday afternoon for a doubleheader. Game one is set for 1 p.m. Stretch Internet and iHigh.com will have play-by-play coverage beginning at 12:55 p.m.
