Rio's Viscosi captures first MSC Player of the Week honor
LOUISVILLE, Ky. --- University of Rio Grande sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Viscosi is the Mid-South Conference Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending Aug. 28, the conference announced on Monday.
Viscosi recorded a pair of shutouts and combined for another to earn the MSC's weekly honor. The Ottawa, Ontario, native, collected three saves in the RedStorm's 2-0 win over Houghton (N.Y.) College to open the week.
Viscosi combined with teammate Jack Marchant (Leeds, England) to shutout Grace University 7-0 on Friday and one day later stopped the only shot on goal in the RedStorm's 4-0 win over Spring Arbor University.
On the week, Viscosi collected four saves in the three RedStorm wins.
Rio Grande head coach Scott Morrissey was pleased for his young net-minder. "Good start for Jonathan and good to get him recognized," he said. "He certainly had a couple of really good saves in that opener against Houghton."
"He played pretty solid in the 45 (minutes) against Grace and obviously did a pretty decent job on Saturday against Spring Arbor," Morrissey added. "So, I'm happy for him and a good start for us."
No. 4-ranked Rio Grande opened the season 3-0. The RedStorm returns to action at 7 p.m. on Saturday as they host MSC foe and arch-rival Shawnee State.
Viscosi is the first recipient of the weekly conference award for the 2010 season.
