Rio's Schunk tabbed Mid-South Conference Baseball Player of the Week

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- University of Rio Grande RedStorm third baseman Tyler Schunk was selected as the Mid-South Conference Baseball Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.

The MSC weekly award is the first of the season for both Schunk.

Schunk hit .483 (14-of-29) with three home runs and 15 runs batted in to earn MSC Player of the Week.

The Cincinnati, Ohio, native, hit safely in seven of eight games, including a pair of three-hit games against conference foe West Virginia University Tech. Schunk concluded the week with five doubles and 10 runs while compiling a .966 slugging percentage.

On the season, Schunk is batting .437 (38-of-87) and leads the MSC with 38 RBIs and 14 doubles. Schunk leads Rio Grande with five home runs and is second in runs scored with 27.

Rio Grande is 23-4 overall and second in the MSC with a 7-1 record. The Redstorm have won seven straight games.

"We're very happy for Tyler," said Rio Grande head coach Brad Warnimont. "Offensively he's locked in right now. He's a very versatile athlete that can play many different positions and he's done an outstanding job both hitting and pitching for us this year."

"He had an outstanding day on Sunday, going 7-for-8 (in the doubleheader) with nine RBI's and two home runs," Warnimont added. "Obviously the league took notice and Tyler is a big reason why we're where we're at right now."

Schunk and the rest of the RedStorm will travel to the University of the Cumberlands this weekend for a four-game series.
