David Smalley

Head Coach - 19th Season
      David Smalley is entering his 19th season at the helm of the Rio Grande women's program, posting a record of 380-204 (.651).  Smalley had guided the women's team to five NAIA National Tournament appearances. Four at the NAIA Division I level ('94, '97, '99, & '00) and one at the NAIA Division II level (2008). Smalley's team have claimed one Great Lakes Region crown and back-to-back American Mideast Conference tournament titles in 1999 and 2000.
      Since 1992, Smalley's team have won an average of 22 games per season, including a school-record 27 twice. The Rio team, under Smalley's direction won 19 games last year and was ranked in the Top 25 for most of the season. During Smalley's regime Rio Grande also claimed a pair of Mid-Ohio Conference (MOC) championships in 1993 and 1994. A 1982 graduate of Rio Grande, Smalley completed his graduate studies at Bowling Green State University, where he also served as an assistant coach on the women's basketball staff, before moving to Morehead State University, also in an assistant's role. He began his coaching career at Warren High School in Vincent, OH as varsity girls' head coach.
      Smalley is a native of Peebles, Ohio. He and his wife, Margaret reside in Rio Grande with their daughter, Evans.        
 

Kirsten Roberson

Assistant Coach - 4th Season
       Kirsten Roberson is in her fourth season in the Rio Grande coaching staff as an assistant coach. Roberson came to Rio Grande prior to 2006-2007 season after playing  for former URG assistant coach Melissa Irvin at the University of Cumberlands (KY). Roberson started all four years for Cumberlands and helped lead them to three consecutive conference titles. She eclipsed the 1,000-career point  plateau playing primarily the small foward position.  
       In additon to assisting Coach Smalley, Roberson heads up the junior varsity program and is involved in all phases of the varsty program.
       Roberson is a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  She received her Master's degree in Athletics Coaching Leadership from Rio Grande in 2010 and currently in the Financial Aid Department.
       Roberson is single and resides on the Rio Grande campus.
 
 

Crystal Taylor

Assistant Coach - 2nd Season
Crystal Taylor begins her second season as a member of the Rio Grande coaching after playing four seasons of college basketball, culminating with one season at the University of Cumberlands, in which she earned All-Mid-South Conference honors and was an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American.  Prior to attending Cumberlands, Taylor played at Schoolcraft College, Wayne County Community College and St. Augustine's College.
 
Taylor, a native of Flint, MI, moved to Detroit at the age of three and attended St. Bridget Catholic School.  She graduated from Mumford High School with honors and play basketball all four years. 
 
She is pursuing her Master's degree while assisting Coach Smalley, Taylor will serve as the head coach of the junior varsity team.
 
Her future plans include going into the field of corrections dealing with the government, FBI or CIA.
