Rio's Smith named MSC Player of the Week

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- University of Rio Grande's Whitney Smith is the Mid-South Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 18, conference officials announced on Monday.
In addition to her player of the week honors, Smith is the MSC Hitter of the Week. St. Catharine College's Charlotte Jewell and Shawnee State University's Kirsti Yates also earns weekly conference honors for their play last week. Jewell is the MSC Setter of the Week while Yates is the MSC Libero of the Week.
The overall conference player of the week award is Smith's first of the season while she picks up her second hitter of the week award. Jewell and Yates earn their first weekly honor of the season.
Smith recorded double-digit kills in two of her three matches while averaging 3.6 kills per game. She finished the week with a .369 attacking percentage while committing just five errors in her 87 swings.
The Albany, Ohio, junior outside hitter stuffed the stat line this week with 32 digs, six service aces and five blocks while helping the RedStorm to a 2-1 week.
Smith's most productive match came in the RedStorm's sweep of University of Pikeville. She recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs and added six service aces in the win.
For the season, Smith is averaging 3.3 kills per game -- which ranks second in the MSC -- and has a .246 attacking percentage.
Rio Grande is 9-6 overall and is tied atop the MSC East Division with a 2-0 conference record.
Jewell averaged 8.6 assists per game while helping the Patriots to a perfect 2-0 week last week.
The Mt. Washington, Ky., freshman setter finished with 42 assists in a 3-2 win over Campbellsville University and added 27 assists in a sweep of Mid-Continent University. Jewell added seven kills and 11 service aces to in the two wins.
This season, Jewell ranks third in the MSC with 7.4 assists per game.
St. Catharine is 12-2 overall and 1-1 in the MSC West Division.
Yates recorded 19, 27 and 31 digs in her three matches last week to average seven digs per game. The Chillicothe, Ohio, sophomore libero committed just one receiving error in 65 chances while helping the Bears to a 2-1 week.
Yates finished the week with a .985 reception percentage. She added two service aces.
This season, Yates is fifth in the MSC averaging 4.8 digs per game.
Shawnee State is 5-9 overall and tied atop the MSC East Division with Rio at 2-0.
