
Savannah, Ga. --- The University of Rio Grande RedStorm softball team finished up play at the Boombah Smash Hit Tournament at Savannah College of Art & Design on Sunday and came with a split of two games for the second consecutive day. Rio lost the first game to the host school, 13-4 in run-rule fashion and took the second game, beating King College, 6-3.
Rio Grande (2-4) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning of game one but could not it as SCAD rallied for three runs in the bottom of the second, took the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth and lowered the boom with eight runs in the fifth.
The RedStorm had seven hits in the game with junior third baseman Jaymie Rector (Heath, OH) leading the offense, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Junior rightfielder Marissa Lennox (Gahanna, OH) was 1-for-1 with a double, a sacrifice bunt and three RBI.
Senior shortstop Amber Bowman (Hebron, OH) was 1-for-3 while junior first baseman Anna Smith (Hamilton, OH) was 1-for-2. Junior pitcher Allison Mills (West Chester, OH) and sophomore leftfielder Kaitie Stewart (Pleasant Hill, OH) also had base hits for Rio Grande.
Mills (1-1) took the loss, lasting four innings, yielding 10 hits and eight runs with five strikeouts and one walk.
In game two, Rio scored one run in every inning but the fourth as it avenged the opening season loss to King College.
The RedStorm collected nine hits in the second game victory. Lennox was the top offensive performer, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Bowman was 2-for-2 with an RBI.
Smith and sophomore second baseman Katie Fuller (Hamilton, OH) added RBI hits and freshman first baseman Amber Myers was 0-for-4, but drove in a run.
Smith (1-1) had a shutout going into the sixth inning when King plated all three of its runs. She went the distance, allowing only four hits while posting three strikeouts and one walk.
Rio Grande will open up Mid-South Conference play next Saturday (March 5) on the road at Pikeville College. Game one is set to begin at 2 p.m.
