Westerville, Ohio --- The University of Rio Grande RedStorm women's track and field squad finished 6th (out of eight teams) at the Otterbein Invitational on Saturday, scoring 36 points. 

 

Junior middle distance runner Cassie Mattia (West Chester, OH) made it three-for-three out of the gate in 2011, winning the 800-meter run for the third consecutive week. Mattia covered the distance in 2:22.45. 

 

Junior thrower Tracie Brown (Logan, OH) was 4th in the shot put with a top toss of 33 feet, 10 ¾ inches. She also placed 7th in the weight throw (35 feet, ¼ inches). 

 

Freshman sprinter Brea Close (Gallipolis, OH) was 5th in the 55-meter dash (7.77) and junior sprinter Kayla Graves (Chillicothe, OH) was 5th in then 200-meter dash with a time of 28.10. Close just missed scoring in the 200, finishing ninth (28.33). 

 

Other RedStorm scoring results: junior thrower Cory Crutcher (Eaton, OH), 6th in the weight throw (35 feet, 7 ¼ inches); senior distance runner Hillary Haines (McConnellsville, OH), 6th in the 1,000-meter run (3:43.93); junior distance runner Kayla Renner (Galloway, OH), 6th in the 1-mile run (5:34.52) and freshman thrower Mary Beth Schramm (Marietta, OH), 8th in the shot put (31 feet, 7 ¼ inches). 

 

Otterbein won the women's event with 245 points. Rio placed ahead of Indiana University East (11 points) and Mount St. Joseph (10).

 

Rio will have the week off before returning to competition on February 4 at the Marietta Invitational. The meet is set to start at 2 p.m.
