RedStorm trounce Pikeville College
Rio Grande --- The University of Rio Grande RedStorm men's soccer team, ranked 9th in the latest NAIA Top 25 poll, got back on the winning side of the ledger in a big way by trouncing Pikeville College 8-0 on Sunday evening in a Mid-South Conference match played at Point Pleasant High School.
Rio Grande (4-2, 1-1 MSC) scored early and often in rolling to victory. Junior forward Ederson Lopes (Sao Paulo, Brazil) began the scoring with a goal in the fourth minute. He was assisted by junior defender Steve O'Hara (Liverpool, England). Lopes would add two assists on the night.
Junior mid-fielder Phil Stansfield (Yorkshire, England) made the count 2-0 in the 8th
minute after receiving a nice feed from sophomore mid-fielder Sam Fairhurst (Wigan, England).
Freshman forward Scott Bibby (Doncaster, England) continued his early success with a goal in the 15th minute to give the RedStorm a 3-0 advantage. Senior defender Marc
Young (Rishton, England) got in on the act with a goal in the 33rd minute to give Rio a 4-0 heading to halftime.
Junior mid-fielder Dylan Williams (Bangor, Wales) put the RedStorm back in the scoring column in the opening minutes of the second half with a goal in the 47th minute.
Freshman forward Richard Isberner (Sao Paulo, Brazil) notched the first of back-to-back markers in the 60th minute. He tacked on another goal in the 74th minute. Sophomore
forward Joel Thiessen (Newcastle, Australia) and freshman Oliver Hewitt-Fisher (Swansea, Wales) collected assists on Isberner's two goals.
Senior mid-fielder Jon Brooks (Blackburn, England) closed out the scoring in the 87th
minute.
"It (the win) was good," said Rio Grande head coach Scott Morrissey. "Those kids had to play yesterday, where we had essentially a day off due to the postponement of the Campbellsville match."
"So obviously, we had a little bit fresher legs than them," Morrissey added. "I still thought the execution was pretty good. Getting the game in too, with all the weather-related issues, getting to play on the artificial turf, certainly it was good to get the game in and get this under our belt, I'm glad that we were able to play and not have to make this one up as well."
Morrissey also reported that there is no make-up date yet for the Campbellsville game, which was postponed on Saturday.
Next up: Rio Grande will host Mount Vernon Nazarene on Wednesday night at Evan Davis Field. Kick off is set for approximately 7 p.m.
