West Portsmouth, Ohio --- The University of Rio Grande RedStorm women's cross country team claimed a 5th place finish (out of nine teams) at the Mid-South Conference Championships on Saturday, hosted by Shawnee State University at Earl Thomas Conley Park. Rio scored 122 points.
Junior Kayla Renner (Galloway, OH) was the top finisher for Rio Grande. She finished 7th overall with a time of 19:11. The finish was good enough for Renner to earn All-Mid-South Conference honors and qualify for the NAIA National Meet for the second year in a row.
Junior Cassie Mattia (West Chester, OH) finished 22nd with a time of 21:00 and sophomore Amy Lower (Westerville, OH) was right behind her in the 23rd spot with a time of 21:05.

Other RedStorm results: senior Hillary Haines (McConnellsville, OH), 37th (22:11); freshman Genna Baker (Gallipolis, OH), 40th (22:24) and junior Danielle Stockham (London, OH), 52nd (23:54).

There were 67 runners in the women's event.

"Kayla ran very well, Cassie had some trouble today, if she would been able to run her normal race we maybe get fourth, but our ladies ran pretty well," said Rio Grande head coach Bob Willey. "Kayla was all-conference so that is a positive, we're pleased for her."

The MSC All-Academic team was announced as well and both Lower and Mattia were named to the squad. "As I said with the men, this is really what's it's all about, both Cassie and Amy are tremendous student/athletes and well deserving of this honor," Willey said. "I'm very happy for them."
