Whitney Smith posted big numbers in Rio's four-set victory over UVA-Wise

Wise, Va. --- The University of Rio Grande RedStorm volleyball team went on the road and came away with a four-set victory over UVA-Wise on Tuesday evening. Rio won by scores of 25-23, 22-25, 25-19 and 25-15.

Rio Grande (20-13, 9-4 MSC E) was able to get big nights out of sophomore outside hitter Whitney Smith (Albany, OH), sophomore middle hitter Erin Sherman (South Webster, OH) and senior outside hitter Rachel Walker (Ironton, OH). Smith topped the kill chart with 16 and also tallied 18 digs. Sherman delivered 11 kills and had three solo blocks and two block assists. Walker also notched 11 kills and came away with two block assists.

Sophomore libero Lauren Raines (Albany, OH) paced the defensive effort with 20 digs. Freshman defensive specialist Nicole Ogg (Albany, OH) had 14 digs. Junior middle hitter Kati Moore (Lancaster, OH) produced three solo blocks and three block assists. 

Senior setter Ashley Bloom (Worthington, OH) had big night as well with 29 assists and seven serve aces. Freshman setter Kayla Landaker (Coshocton, OH) distributed 18 assists. 

Rio Grande snapped a brief two-match losing streak with the victory. The RedStorm are now a very impressive 10-3 on the road this season. 

UVA-Wise fell to 11-21 on the season and 5-8 in the MSC East Division.

Rio took the season series against the Cavaliers, winning both matches. 

Rio will close out the regular season on Friday with a match against former American Mideast Conference foe, Malone. The match will begin at approximately 8 p.m. following the men's basketball games.
