Rio Grande --- The University of Rio Grande women's soccer team's first ever win came against Shawnee State, September 7, 2005. Fast forward to September 29, 2010, Rio Grande's first ever win in the Mid-South Conference came against Shawnee State. Rio Grande won 2-1 over its arch rival to snap a five-game losing streak on Wednesday night at Evan Davis Field.

Rio Grande (2-5, 1-2 MSC) fell behind 1-0 in the opening moments of the game when Shawnee State's Brittney Brooks beat Rio Grande goalkeeper Mara Howell (Covington, OH), in the second minute, to give the Lady Bears a 1-0 lead. Kelley Bowles was credited with an assist on the play.

It didn't long take for the RedStorm to tie the game. Freshman forward Alex Davis (Ashville, OH) notched her first collegiate goal in the sixth minute to make it a 1-1 game.

The score remained tied deep into the second half when Davis was able to get behind Shawnee State goalkeeper Sara Cashdollar and knock home her second goal of the game to give Rio the lead for good in the 72nd minute. Freshman midfielder/defender Rachel Hoffman (Franklin, OH) assisted on the go-ahead goal.

It was big night for Davis, scoring two goals and she also had two near misses, one shot sliding just wide left and missing another off the left post in the second half.

Howell ended up with eight saves on the night for the RedStorm. Cashdollar recorded three saves for the Lady Bears.

Shawnee State (6-2, 2-2 MSC) had a three-game winning streak snapped with the loss.

SSU out-shot Rio in the match, 13-8 and held a 9-5 edge in shots on goal, but Rio led where it counted, on the scoreboard.

Rio Grande head coach Amber Oliver felt her team carried over its effort from the Campbellsville loss on Friday night. "They definitely did," she said. "We played very well in our loss against Campbellsville the other day and we told them that if they continue to play like that then we're going to get wins out of it."

"They showed us that they had the desire and the heart to continue to play like that," Oliver added. "We got away with a win today."

Oliver was very pleased with the play of Davis. "Alex was definitely great up front, we did tell her that she could have had a couple more (goals), but she finished and capitalized on what we needed her to and we were able to get away with a win because of her offensive ability today."

Rio Grande will look to continue the momentum with a non-conference road game at the University of Charleston on Saturday afternoon. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m.
