RedStorm open season with strong effort at Cedarville

Cedarville, Oh. --- The 2009 season finally got underway for the Rio Grande RedStorm men's and women's cross country teams on Saturday at the Friendship Invitational held at Cedarville University. Both men's and women's team ran against stacked fields and Rio Grande did more than hold its own as the men carved out a 3rd place finish and women finished 8th.
The men totaled 111 points in finishing behind NAIA No. 12 Shawnee State, who won the meet with 29 points, and NAIA No. 11 Cedarville (81).

Sophomore Bryce Wilson (Jackson, OH) ran a strong race for the RedStorm as he was the top finisher, garnering a sixth-place finish. Wilson covered the 5-mile course in 25:47. Sophomore Nick Wilson (Fleming, OH) ran 12th overall with a time of 26:05 and junior Matthew Spencer (Pickerington, OH) was 16th (26:15). 

Freshman Nathan Mogle (New Madison, OH), in his first collegiate race, came away with a 48th place finish and produced a time of 27:17. Sophomore Zane Miller was the fifth RedStorm runner to cross the finish line; he was 50th overall with a time of 27:22. Sophomore Chad McCarty (Tipp City, OH) finished 64th
(27:45) and freshman Chris Aldea (Grove City, OH) rounded out the top seven, by claiming a 75th place finish (28:27).

"For the first time out, I was really pleased," said Rio Grande head coach Bob Willey. "With so many young guys and not knowing what to expect, we'll take it."

Other RedStorm men's results: sophomore Lucas Murphy (Grove City, OH), 79th (28:31); sophomore Andrew Edmunds (Huntington, WV), 81st (28:35); sophomore Chas Whittington (Patriot, OH), 82nd (28:36); sophomore Nic Cartee (South Webster, OH), 91st (29:03); freshman Kyle Goode (Racine, OH), 107th (29:39) and freshman Jordan Strickland (Oak Hill, OH), 121st (30:34).

There were 16 teams and 177 runners in the men's race. Rio out-pointed teams such as Otterbein (4th) and NCAA Division I Wright State (5th) at the meet. The
RedStorm also beat two Mid-South Conference schools in Cumberlands, who finished 7th (172) and Campbellsville, who finished 9th (245). 
Next up, Rio Grande will host the 39th annual Rio Invitational at the Stanley Evans
Course on September 26. The women's race will begin the event at 10 a.m.
