Mount Vernon, Ohio --- For the second straight game the University of Rio Grande RedStorm men's soccer team rallied in the second half to score a one goal win, this time taking down former American Mideast Conference foe Mount Vernon Nazarene on the road by a 3-2 score.
No. 2 ranked Rio Grande (9-0) fell behind 2-0 before storming back with three goals over the final 28 minutes to remain unbeaten on the season.
Mount Vernon Nazarene (5-3) scored just before the half to take a 1-0 lead on a goal by Cody Snouffer. The score came in the 42nd minute.
The Cougars added a second goal in the 48th minute to take a 2-nil lead when Kyle Maxam found the back of the net. Chris Allen assisted on both goals for the Cougars.
The RedStorm once again cranked it up late in the match. The scoring for the RedStorm began in the 62nd minute when senior defender Steven O'Hara (Liverpool, England) ripped a shot in from 25 yards out to cut the deficit to 2-1. Senior forward Ederson Lopes (Sao Paulo, Brazil) was credited with an assist on the play.
Three minutes later, sophomore forward Scott Bibby (Doncaster, England) tied the game with a goal as sophomore midfielder Rafael Maccauro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) slipped the ball through to Bibby, who finished it.
Maccauro would nail the game-winner in the 80th minute on a direct kick from about 20 yards out.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Viscosi (Ottawa, Ontario) registered two saves on the night while his counterpart Tyson Porter stopped nine shots for the Cougars.
Rio Grande had a decided advantage in shots, 26-7, while holding a 13-4 edge in shots on goal.
The loss for MVNU snapped a three-match winning streak.
Rio Grande will jump back into Mid-South Conference play on Saturday with a road game at Campbellsville. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
