Lebanon, Tenn. --- A three-match winning streak came to an end for the University of Rio Grande RedStorm volleyball squad on Friday afternoon in the opening match of the TranSouth/Mid-South Classic hosted Cumberland University. Rio lost in four games to the host school, Cumberland, 17-25, 17-25, 25-15 and 23-25.

Rio Grande (4-5) picked up huge performances from sophomores Erin Sherman (South Webster, OH) and Whitney Smith (Albany, OH) but it wasn't enough to get a win. Sherman delivered a match-high 15 kills and had two solo blocks and one block assist while Smith posted 10 kills, five digs and delivered two serve aces.

Sophomore outside hitter Tresa Swatzel (Shade, OH) added six kills to the RedStorm effort.

Sophomore libero Lauren Raines (Albany, OH) led the defensive effort for Rio Grande with eight digs. She also posted three serve aces.

Senior setter Ashley Bloom (Worthington, OH) handed out 23 assists and had four serve aces. Freshman setter Kayla Landaker (Coshocton, OH) chipped in with 10 assists. 

Cumberland (13-3) had a balanced attack with Jessica Gericke leading the way with 10 kills. She also had seven digs. Jaclyn Rodriguez had nine digs to lead Cumberland and Taylor Denney and Meghan Gass had 16 assists each.

Rio Grande will face Trevecca Nazarene later tonight at 7 p.m.
