RedStorm lose showdown with Lindsey Wilson
Rio Grande --- The University of Rio Grande RedStorm men's soccer team, ranked No. 8 in the latest NAIA Top 25 poll, lost its first ever Mid-South Conference game in a showdown with NAIA No. 6 and MSC favorite Lindsey Wilson by a 2-1 score on Saturday night at Evan Davis Field.
Rio Grande (3-2, 0-1 MSC) had a sluggish first half and went to the intermission trailing 1-0.Lower had two saves on the night, while LWC goalkeeper Callum Christie had one save.
"I was proud of the performance, I was a little disappointed in our first half performance going forward," said Rio Grande head coach Scott Morrissey. "I felt like we gave the ball away quite a few times, we didn't take care of it the way I thought we would take care of the first 45 minutes."
"I thought maybe we sat back a bit too much," Morrissey added. "But then in the second half, I really thought it was a different story. I thought we played well, we had some good scoring opportunities and it just didn't fall our way."
Although Lindsey Wilson is clearly in the driver's seat with the win, Morrissey says his team still plans to be a player in the Mid-South Conference. "The thing that we have to do now is, we need to take each one of the games in the conference one game at a time, I know that's a cliché, and make sure that we put ourselves in the position to be a No. 2 seed going into that conference tournament," Morrissey said.
"From the national situation as long as we can take care of our business and do what we need to do, I think we'll be okay," Morrissey added.
Rio Grande will have a week to think about things as they travel to Campbellsville next Saturday, September 26 and then play host to Pikeville College on Sunday, September 27. Saturday's match will kick-off at 2 p.m. while the Sunday home game will kick-off at 7 p.m.
