Rio Grande --- The University of Rio Grande RedStorm men's soccer team, ranked No. 4 in the NAIA preseason Top 25 rating, rolled to a 7-0 shutout victory on Friday night over Grace College in the first day of action at the D. Wayne Evans Classic held at Evan Davis Field.
Rio Grande (2-0) scored early and often in getting the victory. Sophomore midfielder Rafael Maccauro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) started the scoring on his way to a huge night. He scored an unassisted goal in the second minute of the game to give Rio all it would need on the evening. Maccauro would assist on the next two goals, the first by sophomore forward Richard Isberner (Sao Paulo, Brazil) in the 13th minute and the second on a goal by Roberto Lopes (Sao Paulo, Brazil). The goal was the second of the season for Lopes.
The RedStorm would add another tally before halftime when senior forward Ederson Lopes (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored after receiving a nice feed from fellow senior Chris Anderson (Lancaster, England). The goal was also the second on the season for Ederson.
Rio Grande would score three more times in the second half. Isberner scored a second goal of the game in the 65th minute to up the count to 5-0. Maccauro racked up his third assist of the game on the play.
Senior midfielder Dylan Williams (Bangor, Wales) scored on a penalty kick in the 69th minute and Anderson notched an unassisted goal in the 79th minute to close out the scoring.
Sophomore Jonathan Viscosi (Ottawa, Canada) and junior Jack Marchant (Leeds, England) split time in goal. Marchant recorded two saves in the game.
"We got off to a really good start, got the early goal and picked up another fairly early goal and I thought we settled in," said Rio Grande head coach Scott Morrissey. "I thought we played really well the first 45 minutes. The execution was good; ball movement was good, 4-nil at the half I think the guys took their foot off of it a little bit."
"It was a good result, good start though, I was pleased there," Morrissey added. "I think the one thing for Grace that was a little bit different was that they played yesterday, so they were coming off playing back-to-back where we had a day's rest."
Rio Grande will face Spring Arbor on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Cougars (0-1) lost to NAIA No. 7 Notre Dame College, 3-0 in the first game of the day. "I think it will have to be an up-tempo type of game, I think Spring Arbor was really well-organized, I think they make it very difficult for us to get in behind them," Morrissey said. "I think that's one of the things that we need to try to focus on, stretch the game as we did tonight and see where it takes us."
Grace (0-2) will face Notre Dame College (1-0) in the first game on Saturday with a 3 p.m. kick-off.
The Rio/Spring Arbor game will be streamed live on iHigh.com.
