Rio Grande --- The University of Rio Grande RedStorm baseball program has added another recruit to the fold for the 2010-11 season with the signing of Columbus Briggs High School standout Zachary Taylor to a national letter of intent.
Taylor, a 5'9" first baseman/pitcher, put up some outstanding numbers during his senior campaign in high school. He earned 1st team all-conference honors and was tabbed honorable mention all-district while posting a .568 batting average with three home runs, 13 doubles and seven triples.
"I'm very happy and looking forward to the next four years," Taylor said at the signing. "When I talked to the baseball coach I knew I wanted to come here."
"I knew the baseball team was very successful and that this is a very friendly environment," he added.
Rio Grande head baseball coach Brad Warnimont believes that Taylor has not yet reached his ceiling as a player. "Zach has a great deal of potential, as he gets bigger and stronger his impact will grow in the program."
Taylor said he is driven to succeed on the field. "I'm very motivated and work really hard," he said. "I need to work on not getting down on myself."
"My goal is to play hard and win," Taylor added.
Taylor plans to major in special education.
Zachary is the son of Sam and Carrie Taylor of Columbus.
He joins Jake Scarlato of Oak Hills High School in Cincinnati, Adena High School's Andrew Cottrill, Cameron Norman of Lancaster High School and Loren Huffman of Raceland-Worthington High School in Raceland, Ky. as the current crop of recruits in the 2010-11 RedStorm baseball recruiting class.
Rio Grande is coming off a record breaking 48-13 season in 2010 in which it appeared in the NAIA National Tournament for the first time in school history. Rio finished second in the Mid-South Conference during the regular season with a 20-7 mark. The RedStorm were champions of the MSC Tournament.
