RedStorm baseball signs Adena's Cottrill
Rio Grande --- The University of Rio Grande RedStorm baseball program has added Adena High School's Andrew Cottrill to the fold. Cottrill signed a national letter of intent to play for Rio Grande beginning in the fall of the 2010-11 season.
Cottrill, a 6'2" 190-pound pitcher, ranks high in a number of categories within the Scioto Valley Conference. He also played third base and first base for the Warriors and head coach Jeff Zickafoose. He posted four victories on the season, which tied him for 9th in the SVC, he registered a 1.39 earned run average, which was second in the conference and he had 49 strikeouts, which was 8th best in the league.
In three seasons, Cottrill was nearly unbeatable on the mound, posting a 25-3 record.
Cottrill also did his share of damage at the plate, batting .462 on the season, 5th best in the SVC and was second in RBI's with 31. He was tied for 3rd in doubles with 10. Cottrill scored 24 runs on the season, tying him for 12th best in the league. Those numbers earned him 1st team All-SVC and 1st team all-district honors.
He also won the Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award presented by the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA).
"I am excited to be signing with such a good program," Cottrill said.
Rio Grande head coach Brad Warnimont is pleased to bring a player like Cottrill into the fold. "Andrew is a quality young man from a quality program," Warnimont said. "He is a dual role player right now and we'll let him compete at both in the fall."
"We're very happy to have him," Warnimont added.
Cottrill believes he brings some good qualities with him to Rio Grande. "I consider myself to have a good work ethic and good leadership," he said.
He is currently undecided on a major at this point.
Cottrill said his goal while at Rio Grande is to "become a better player."
Andrew is the son of Paul and Vivian Cottrill of Frankfort, Ohio.
Cottrill is the third member of the 2010-11 recruiting class for the RedStorm baseball team, joining Cameron Norman of Lancaster High School and Loren Huffman of Raceland-Worthington High School in Raceland, Ky.
Rio Grande is coming off a record breaking 48-13 season in 2010 in which they appeared in the NAIA National Tournament for the first time in school history. Rio finished second in the Mid-South Conference during the regular season with a 20-7 mark. The RedStorm were champions of the MSC Tournament.
