Rio Grande defeats Mid-Continent at Cedarville Tournament
Cedarville, Oh. --- The University of Rio Grande RedStorm men's soccer team, ranked No. 9 in the latest NAIA Top 25 poll, defeated Mid-Continent 4-2 on Friday night in the first game of the Dave Jones Memorial Tournament at Cedarville University.
Rio Grande (2-1) scored three first half goals to gain control of the match. Junior forward Ederson Lopes (Sao Paulo, Brazil) got the scoring started for the RedStorm in the 7th minute. He was assisted by sophomore mid-fielder Sam Fairhurst
(Wigan, England).
 
Fairhurst made the score 2-0 in the 23rd minute as he received a long feed from junior defender Phil
Stansfield (Yorkshire, England) and finished the play.
 

Freshman mid-fielder Richard Isberner (Sao Paulo, Brazil) gave Rio a 3-0 lead three minutes later when he found the back of the net on an assist from Lopes.

 

Rio took the 3-nil lead to halftime.

 

Mid-Continent, who received one vote in the latest NAIA Top 25 poll, cut the deficit to 3-2 with a pair of goals in the second half (48th and 51st minutes). 

 

Rio finished off the scoring when freshman forward Scott Bibby (Doncaster, England) scored in the 59th minute. Isberner picked up the assist on the play.

 

Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Lower (South Webster, OH) notched three saves.

 

Rio has now been ranked in the Top 25 for the last 16 polls dating back to the 2007 season.

 

Rio will face Bryan College on Saturday. Kick-off is set for 4:30 p.m.
