Rio to host Mid-South Conference Track & Field Championships
Rio Grande --- The University of Rio Grande will host the 2010 Mid-South Conference Track & Field Championships this weekend at the Stockmeister Track Complex.
After months of preparation, Rio Grande head coach Bob Willey knows the time is now and is anxious and excited for the meet to get underway. "It's going to be an outstanding meet, being the first year in the Mid-South, it puts a little more pressure on us to try to a good job to run the meet," Willey said. "Cumberlands had the meet the last three years and (head coach) Floyd Stroud always does an outstanding job of running meets at Cumberlands."
"We knew it was coming, we've been working on it since (last) June, and now it's here," Willey added. "Hopefully the weather cooperates and all of our helpers, because it takes usually about 112 people to successfully run a big track meet, hopefully it all falls into place."
Willey said the athletes are chomping at the bit to have a home meet after competing on the road week-in and week-out. "Our athletes are excited to have a home meet," he said. "A lot of good things are happening, it will be a great opportunity for people in the area to see some outstanding talent and hopefully we can perform well."
Rio Grande has hosted a conference championship on two prior occasions, the American Mideast Conference (AMC) Meet was held at Rio Grande in 2003 and the Mid-Ohio Conference Championships were held in 1998.
With nearly a month remaining in the season, the game plan for Rio Grande is to peak closer to the NAIA National Meet in late May, but the coaching staff still wants the teams to do well this weekend. "It's one of those things, we usually don't try to peak for the conference meet because it's usually so early in the year, as opposed to the national championships, which are still a month away."
"We're still, like most teams in the middle of our season, but obviously we'll try to go in with somewhat fresh legs to give them the opportunity to perform as well as possible," Willey added. "We've had a few injuries, a few setbacks, like every program, we'll just see if we can get everybody nursed back to health and be ready to go by Friday and Saturday."
The meet will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Friday with field events. A banquet will be held in the Davis University Center Cafeteria at 7 p.m. on Friday evening. On Saturday, the events will begin at 10:30 a.m.
