OWENSBORO, Ky. - A season of struggle for the University of Rio Grande volleyball program continued on Saturday with straight-set losses to Indiana University Southeast and Brescia University in a River States Conference Crossover at Brescia's Moore Center.
The RedStorm dropped a 25-28, 25-15, 26-24 decision to the Grenadiers before falling 25-22, 25-19, 25-17 to the host Bearcats.
Rio Grande finished the day at 3-16 overall and 0-4 in league play. Head coach Billina Donaldson's squad has now lost each of its last six outings.
The RedStorm managed just a .065 attack percentage in the loss to IUS, committing one more attack error (15) than kills (14) over the final two sets.
Senior Aleah Pelphrey (Piketon, OH) had seven kills to lead Rio at the net, while freshmen Carly Shriver (Gallipolis, OH) and Ryanne Stoffel (Englewood, OH) finished with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Sophomore Katie Hemsley (Jackson, OH) tallied a team-best 11 digs in a losing cause.
Alexis Bassett had a match-high 10 kills in the win for the Grenadiers (6-11, 3-1 RSC), who also piled up 10 service aces in the victory.
Hannah Sipe handed out 21 assists for IUS, while Monica Loftus and Kenna Burman finished with 16 and 13 digs, respectively. Caitlynn Pfaadt had four aces and Maddie Jacobi had three of her own in the winning effort.
In the loss to Brescia, Rio had 21 attack errors to go along with 21 kills in 93 swings for a .000 attack percentage.
Pelphrey had 10 of the kills for the RedStorm, pulling to within nine of the 1,000-kill mark for her career. She also tied Hemsley for team honors with 11 digs.
Stoffel had a club-best nine assists in the loss, while freshman Baleigh Bradley (Portsmouth, OH) also reached double-figures with 10 digs.
Rhiannon Ungerer had a match-high 12 kills for Brescia (12-8, 4-1 RSC), while teammates April Buckner and Alex Satterfield were credited with 19 and 13 assists, respectively. Buckner also had three of the Bearcats' four service aces.
Kristin Logsdon had 15 digs in the victory, while Cassidy Thielen added 12 of her own and Tonya Tivitt finished with three blocks.
Rio Grande returns to action on Tuesday night against West Virginia University-Tech. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley, W.Va.
