RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Host Mount Vernon University grabbed an early first half lead and then pulled away down the stretch for a 3-0 win over the University of Rio Grande, Thursday evening, in non-conference women's soccer action at Cougar Field.
The Cougars improved to 4-1 with their fourth consecutive victory and the program's eighth in nine all-time meetings with Rio Grande.
The RedStorm slipped to 1-2 with the loss.
Amberly Knox scored what proved to be the only goal that MVNU would need with 36:12 left in the first half thanks to assists by Rachel Graver and Alexal Skal. Knox pushed the shot past Rio junior goal keeper Andrea Vera (Quito, Ecuador) after a pileup in the front of the net following a crossing pass from the right wing.
Knox added an insurance marker with 29:43 left in the contest, gathering in a deflected shot by Skal and finishing with her left foot near the post.
The Cougars closed out the scoring with 10:02 left to play when the officials ruled that Caylee Rosa's corner kick attempt crossed the goal line in the air before Vera came up with the save. Vera argued the decision and was eventually given a red card, resulting in her ejection from the match.
Mount Vernon Nazarene finished with a 15-5 edge in shots overall, including a 7-2 edge in shots on goal.
Madi Moore authored her fourth straight shutout in goal for the Cougars, recording a pair of saves in the process.
Vera had four stops in a losing cause for the RedStorm before giving way to junior Kelsey Lee (West Chester, OH) for the final 10 minutes.
Rio Grande returns to action on Saturday afternoon, hosting Milligan (Tenn.) College in a non-conference tilt at Evan E. Davis Field. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
