MONTREAT, N.C. - After suffering a third straight loss to open the day, the University of Rio Grande notched its first victory of the season on Saturday at the final day of the Volley in the Mountains Classic hosted by Montreat College.
The RedStorm began their day with a straight sets loss to the host Cavaliers (25-19, 25-20, 25-20) before posting a come-from-behind 21-25, 25-16, 25-13, 25-14 win over Talladega (Ala.) College.
Freshman Carly Shriver (Gallipolis, OH) had a team-high 18 assists and 11 digs in the loss to Montreat, while freshman Ryanne Stoffel (Farmersville, OH) had 16 assists and senior Aleah Pelphrey (Piketon, OH) finished with 13 kills.
Anyla Kryeziu and Courtney Glover had 14 and 11 kills, respectively, for the Cavaliers, while Abby Graham had 37 assists and 12 digs. Kendra Johnson had a team-best 14 digs in the winning effort.
Stoffel had 20 assists and six service aces to fuel Rio's winning effort against Talladega, while Shriver finished with 15 assists and three aces of her own. The RedStorm tallied 13 aces as a team.
Pelphrey and sophomore Patricia Dennis (Celina, OH) had 12 and 10 kills, respectively, in the victory, freshman Taylor Carroll (Atlanta, GA) and sophomore Katie Hemsley (Jackson, OH) had 22 and 10 digs, respectively.
Carlesia Nunnally had seven kills in a losing cause for the Tornadoes, while Bethany Holland had 28 assists and Destini Kindred had a solo block and five block assists.
Keundra Rembert had 17 digs to lead Talladega, while Tamera Prince and Rossiel Lobaton-Silva had 12 and 10 digs, respectively.
Rio Grande returns to action on Tuesday night, traveling to the University of Pikeville for a non-conference match. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
