MONTREAT, N.C. - The University of Rio Grande saw its 2017 volleyball season get off to a tough start Friday afternoon, as the RedStorm dropped matches to the University of Jamestown (N.D.) and Taylor (Ind.) University at the Volley in the Mountains Classic hosted by Montreat College.
Jamestown, ranked No. 17 in the NAIA preseason coaches' poll, cruised to a 25-20, 25-12, 25-12 win over Rio, while the Trojans recorded a 25-12, 25-18, 25-18 victory over the RedStorm.
Rio Grande finished with six more attack errors (23) than it had kills (17) in the opening match, finishing with a -.079 attack percentage.
Jamestown, by contrast, had just six errors among its 78 total attacks and posted an impressive .423 percentage.
Senior Aleah Pelphrey (Piketon, OH) had seven kills to lead the RedStorm in a losing cause, while freshman Ryanne Stoffel (Farmersville, OH) had eight assists and senior Kylan Strausbaugh (Chillicothe, OH) had a match-best 11 digs.
Morgan Hensch had 11 kills to pace the Jimmies in a winning effort, while Josie Beckman and Whitney King ended with 16 and 12 assists, respectively. Beckman was also one of four Jamestown players with two service aces en route to a team total of 10.
Meghan Orr added nine digs for the Jimmies, while Haley Glasoe had four solo blocks and two block assists.
Strausbaugh had seven kills, 10 digs and a pair of service aces in the loss to Taylor, while Pelphrey also had seven kills and freshman Carly Shriver (Gallipolis, OH) finished with 13 assists.
Becca Gerig had 12 kills and seven digs in the win for the Trojans, while Haley Harrell and Brooke Syswerda totaled 16 assists each. Jamie Scherb also had seven digs and Laura Craig had four of Taylor's 11 service aces.
Rio Grande returns to action Saturday morning, battling tourney host Montreat in the 9 a.m. opener before wrapping up the tourney against Talladega (Ala.) College at 3 p.m.
