RIO GRANDE, Ohio - After lighting up the University of Rio Grande to the tune of three goals and two assists in last year's 6-0 win over the RedStorm, Indiana Wesleyan University's Tia Sanford picked up where she left off.
Sanford had three goals and assisted on another, while teammate Lexis Garcia had a goal and an assist of her own to lead the Wildcats in a 7-0 season-opening victory over Rio Grande, Friday evening, in non-conference women's soccer action at Evan E. Davis Field.
Sanford scored two of her goals in the opening half as IWU bolted to a 4-0 lead at the intermission.
The first marker came just 4:54 into the contest when Sanford took a pass from teammate Olivia Schmidt and pushed a shot past Rio junior goal keeper Andrea Vera (Quito, Ecuador) from the upper left corner of the 18-yard box.
Just over six minutes later, Sanford sent a crossing pass to the top of the 18-yard box for Garcia, who found the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.
Garcia assisted on Sanford's second goal at 15:31 and Schay Mulherin fired a shot that deflected off Vera's hands and into the net with 14:24 left before the half to give the 'Cats their commanding advantage at the break.
Sanford notched an unassisted marker just over two minutes into the second half and Nichole Varady did the same 63 seconds later to make it 6-0.
IWU set the final score with 22:01 left to play on a goal by Amy Jaron, with Madison Miller earning an assist.
The Wildcats finished with a 21-2 edge in shots, including 12-1 in shots on goal.
Vera had five saves in a losing cause for Rio Grande.
Alex Seabeck started in net for IWU and went the first 60:59 before giving way to Jess Humphrey. Seabeck earned the win and had the lone save recorded by the Wildcats.
Rio Grande returns to action on Tuesday night, traveling to Campbellsville University for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
