NEW ALBANY, Ind. - The University of Rio Grande has been picked fifth in the 2017 River States Conference Women's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll.
The RedStorm, who finished 3-13-2 overall and 2-5-1 in the RSC last year, tallied 50 points in the balloting of the league's 10 head coaches.
Second-year head coach Tony Daniels' team, which opens the season at home on August 25 against Indiana Wesleyan University, finished just behind West Virginia University-Tech in the voting.
The Golden Bears, a playoff team last season, had 55 points in the balloting.
Point Park (Pa.) University was the favorite in the poll. The Pioneers won their second straight conference tournament title last year and totaled 75 points and four of the 10 first-place votes in the voting.
Point Park was 10-8-2 overall, 7-2 RSC last year and brought home another conference championship after finishing second in the 2016 regular season. The Pioneers once again qualified for the NAIA National Championship Opening Round and lost 3-0 to No. 2-ranked Lindsey Wilson.
Asbury (Ky.) University was second in the poll with 67 votes, which included one first-place vote. The Eagles were 10-6-3 overall, 5-2-1 RSC last year and reached the conference semifinals.
Ohio Christian University was close behind in third place with 65 votes. The Trailblazers tied Point Park for the league-high of four first-place votes. OCU led the conference in overall wins last year at 11-7-2, won the regular-season title at 7-1-1 RSC and played in the conference finals.
Following WVU-Tech and Rio in sixth place was Carlow (Pa.) University, which earned 41 points. Cincinnati Christian was not far behind and picked seventh with 39 points coming off a 10-win season.
IU East was picked eighth with 25 points. The Red Wolves are in their first year competing in women's soccer.
Midway (Ky.) University was chosen ninth with 22 points followed by Brescia (Ky.) University with 11.
