RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Mitchell Osmond and Matheus Morgan scored goals less than two minutes apart in the second half to help the University of Rio Grande pull away for a 3-0 season-opening win over Saint Xavier University, Saturday night, at Evan E. Davis Field.
The RedStorm, whose lineup was hampered by a handful of pre-season injuries, extended their home win streak to 29 straight games and their home unbeaten streak to 35 consecutive outings with the victory.
Saint Xavier was also playing its season opener.
Rio Grande, which is ranked No. 2 in the preseason NAIA coaches' poll, scored what proved to be the only goal it would need just 19:13 into the contest when sophomore Deri Corfe (Chester, England) found the back of the net off an assist by junior Ben Mendoza (Chichester, England).
That's how things stayed until the RedStorm put the win on ice with the late markers which came just 1:57 apart.
Osmond, a junior from Sydney, Australia, scored off of a header by junior Eduardo Zurita (Sant Boi de Llobregat, Spain) with 15:29 left to play, while Morgan - a senior from Vila Velha, Brazil - scored on a direct kick from the top of the 18-yard box with 13:32 remaining.
Rio Grande finished with a 23-3 edge in shots overall and an 11-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Rio freshman Luis Rodriguez (San Jose, Costa Rica) stopped the only shot on frame that he faced en route to his first collegiate victory.
Frank Valle recorded eight saves in a losing cause for the Cougars.
Rio Grande returns to action next Saturday when it hosts Roosevelt (Ill.) University. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
