RedStorm softball splits at WV State
Institute, WV --- The University of Rio Grande RedStorm softball team gained a split of a doubleheader on Monday afternoon at West Virginia State. Rio lost the first game in eight innings, 4-3 and rebounded in game two for a 4-2 victory.
Rio Grande (16-16) collected 10 hits in the first game, but it was not enough to score a win. Senior leftfielder Leah Hamman (Lexington, OH) was the top offensive performer for the RedStorm as she went 3-for-4 with three doubles and an RBI.
Freshman designated hitter Mackenzie Rucker (Proctorville, OH) was 2-for-4 with a run scored and freshman third baseman Jaymie Rector (Heath, OH) went 1-for-2.
Sophomore hurler Anna Smith (Ross, OH) again pitched well enough to win, but came up on the losing end. Smith (9-12) went the distance, allowing only six hits and four runs with one walk and one strikeout.
The RedStorm responded in game two behind the solid pitching of sophomore Allison Mills (West Chester, OH). Mills (7-4) pitched all seven innings, scattering 10 hits and allowing only two runs. She fanned five and walked one.
Junior shortstop Amber Bowman (Hebron, OH) went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI's to lead Rio Grande.
Rector and freshman centerfielder Jessica Gall (Mount Vernon, OH) were both 2-for-3.
West Virginia State now stands at 19-17 on the season.
Rio Grande will step back into Mid-South Conference play on Tuesday versus West Virginia Tech. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. Stretch Internet will have play-by-play coverage beginning at 2:55 p.m.
