COLUMBIA, Ky. - Connor Messer set a new school record in the pole vault and hit the "B" qualifying standard for the upcoming NAIA national championships in the process, leading the University of Rio Grande men's track and field team at Sunday's Lindsey Wilson Twilight at Blue Raider Stadium.
Messer, a freshman from Ashland, Ky., took first place in the pole vault by clearing 4.60m (15'1"), bettering the "B" standard of 4.57m and earning a trip to the NAIA National Championship meet, May 25-27, at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium in Gulf Shores, Ala.
Junior Clinton Campbell (Malta, OH) took first place in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.33, while senior teammate Floyd Lowry (St. Paris, OH) finished second in the same event after crossing in 1:02.18.
The RedStorm also got a pair of fifth place showings from sophomore Brandon Massey (Waxhaw, NC) in the 100-meter dash (11.19) and the long jump (6.72m), while the 4x800 team - comprised of freshman Keshawn Jones (Mansfield, OH), sophomore Mike Norris (Dayton, OH), Lowry and freshman Ethan Greenawalt (Orlando, FL) - finished second in a time of 7:59.75.
