RedStorm volleyball wins first road match

Beckley, WV---The University of Rio Grande RedStorm volleyball squad went on the road for the first time in the young 2009 season and came away with a straight set victory, 27-25, 25-20 and 25-23.

Rio Grande (4-2) had trouble closing out the match. Leading 21-12, the RedStorm allowed Mountain State to get back in the game, but held on for the win.  

Freshman middle hitter Erin Sherman (South Webster, OH) led the way with 13 kills. She also notched two blocks. Fellow freshman outside hitter Whitney Smith (Albany, OH) and junior middle hitter Kati Moore (Lancaster, OH) added eight kills each and junior middle blocker Rachel Walker (Ironton, OH) notched five kills. Smith added three blocks and Moore posted two. Freshman outside hitter Tresa Swatzel (Athens, OH) produced two blocks.

 

Junior setter Ashley Bloom (Columbus, OH) and freshman setter Micah Motes (Chillicothe, OH) both reached double figures in assists with Bloom handing out 17 and Motes recorded 10.

 

Junior libero Jacquie Whittle (Chillicothe, OH) paced the defensive attack with 19 digs. Bloom added 13 digs and Smith had 11. Sophomore defensive specialist Kristen Cassady (Logan, OH) was on the verge of double figures with nine digs.

 

Bloom also delivered two serve aces.

 

Rio Grande will step back into Mid-South Conference, September 9 at Georgetown College in doubleheader action.
