TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Mike Norris and Nikola Andjelic both hit the "B" qualifying standard for the upcoming NAIA national championships in the 800-meter run and 110-meter hurdles, respectively, to lead the University of Rio Grande men's track & field team in Saturday's Indiana State University Twilight at the Gibson Track & Field Complex.
Norris, a sophomore from Dayton, Ohio, placed eighth in the 800 with a time of 1:53.29, just under the "B" standard of 1:53.50, while Andjelic - a sophomore from Split, Croatia - grabbed fifth in the 110 hurdles with a finish of 14.91 to get under the "B" standard of 14.95.
The RedStorm also had a trio of distance runners compete in the Run for Chardon Half-Marathon on Sunday, with all three meeting the "A" standard of 1:13.30 for the national meet.
Sophomore Kameron Carpenter (Newark, OH) took first place with a time of 1:12.56, while seniors Dallas Guy (Buffalo, OH) and Blake Freed (Uhrichsville, OH) taking third and fourth place, respectively, with times of 1:13.03 and 1:13.05
The NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships are scheduled for May 25-27 in Gulf Shores, Ala.
Athletes representing Rio posted a handful of other Top 10 showings at Indiana State including sophomore Brandon Massey (Waxhaw, NC), who was third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.12; freshman Adam Champer (Malvern, OH), who took sixth in the discus throw with an effort covering 41.97m; freshman Connor Messer (Ashland, KY), who was seventh in the pole vault after clearing 4.34m; and Andjelic, who was seventh in the javelin throw with a toss of 45.88m and eighth in the pole vault with a height of 4.19m.
Rio's 4x400 relay team - comprised of sophomore Phil Colbert (North Philadelphia, PA), freshman Keshawn Jones (Mansfield, OH), Norris and Massey - finished second in a time of 3:21.18.
Rio Grande returns to action in its regular season finale on Sunday when the RedStorm participates in the Lindsey Wilson Twilight in Columbia, Ky. The meet is slated for a 4 p.m. EDT start.
