PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Twenty-five members of the University of Rio Grande's 32-woman track & field team recording scoring finishes and the RedStorm captured their third consecutive conference championship, taking top honors at Saturday's 2017 River States Conference Championships hosted by Point Park University at the RMU Island Sports Center.
Rio Grande topped the final team standings with 257 points, while the host Pioneers finished runner-up for the third year in a row with 209 points. Ohio Christian was a distant third with 85 points.
The top six finishers in each event scored points, with the top three in each event earning all-conference honors.
Junior Tyanna Petty (Somerset, OH) led the way for the RedStorm, tallying a half-dozen top three performances, including three first-place finishes.
Petty took top honors in the 400-meter hurdles (1:04.57), high jump (1.62m) and triple jump (10.15m), while placing second in both the 100-meter dash (12.58) and long jump (5.20m) and taking third place in the 100-meter hurdles (15.45m). Her showing in the 400 hurdles met the "B" qualifying standard for the NAIA national championship meet in late May.
Senior Katie Roberts (Vinton, OH) earned RSC Outstanding Field Athlete of the Year honors by recording a quartet of top four finishes. She placed first in the hammer throw (43.86m), second in both the shot put (11.59m) and discus throw (36.37m) and fourth in the javelin throw (30.61m).
Freshman Allison McNeal (Logan, OH) also had a big day for herself, winning both the shot put and discus throw competitions with tosses of 12.15m and 37.80m, respectively, while sophomore Lucy Williams (Athens, OH) took first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:09.71 and fifth in the 5,000-meter run after crossing in 20:05.24.
The RedStorm also received first place showings from seniors Bre West (Gallipolis, OH) and Nichole Worsham (Beavercreek, OH). West won the pole vault by clearing 2.19m and Worsham took top honors in the 5,000-meter racewalk with a time of 33:39.18.
Other top performances for the RedStorm included senior Shelby Pickens, who was second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:12.24 and sixth in the 100-meter hurdles after crossing in 18.50; junior Maddie Rigsby (Tuppers Plains, OH), who was second in the high jump after clearing 1.57m and third in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:13.32; freshman Natalie Seeberg (Urbana, OH), who was second in the hammer throw with a toss of 39.17m and fourth in the discus with a throw covering 33.17m; junior Emili Sannes (Carlisle, OH), who was third in both the 800-meter run (2:29.43) and 1,500-meter run (5:09.58); junior Andrea Hunt (Eldorado, OH), who was third in the triple jump with a leap of 9.85m and sixth in the long jump with an effort of 4.73m; senior Clarissa Johnson-Kosnich (Hillsboro, OH), who was third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:02.63; sophomore Taylor Grubb (Thornville, OH), who was third in the 5,000-meter racewalk with a time of 41:41.77; junior Keri Lawrence (Pomeroy, OH), who was fourth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 5:15.53, fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a finish of 18.17 and sixth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:33.75; senior Katie Glover (Ashville, OH), who was fourth in both the 3,000-meter steeplechase (14:48.14) and 5,000-meter racewalk (41:42.17); junior Aubrey Dunfee (Baltimore, OH), who was fourth in the 5,000-meter run after crossing in 20:04.50 and fifth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 5:17.89; sophomore Kayla Charmichael (Newark, OH), who was fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.85 and fifth in the 100-meter dash after a finish of 12.96; senior Alex Ellis (Ona, WV), who was fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:32.64; junior Marissa McConaha (Duncan Falls, OH), who placed fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:18.93; sophomore Alexis Johnson-Schoolcraft (Mercerville, OH), who was fifth in the hammer throw with a toss covering 31.58m; sophomore Taylor Monk (Ironton, OH), who was fifth in the javelin throw with a toss of 29.72m; senior McKenzie Coriell (Lucasville, OH), who was sixth in the javelin with a throw of 28.83m; junior Kylie Caudill (Pickerington, OH), who placed sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 9.26m; freshman Marissa Commons (Maple Heights, OH), who was sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:04.40; and freshman Kelsey Miller (Georgetown, OH), who was sixth in the 10,000-meter run after crossing the finish line in 49:04.49.
Rio's 4x100 relay team - which included West, freshman Maria Fondale (New Lexington, OH), McConaha and Charmichael - placed second in a time of 51.80, while the 4x400 team (Lawrence, Sannes, Ellis and Johnson-Kosnich) were third in 4:26.60 and the 4x800 team - comprised of Ellis, Grubb, sophomore Maggie Dellinger (Washington Court House, OH) and junior Rachel Ball (Chillicothe, OH) - also finished fourth in a time of 10:33.02.
Veteran Rio Grande head coach Bob Willey was named the RSC Coach of the Year, while the RSC Outstanding Track Athlete of the Year went to Point Park's Anna Shields and Ohio Christian's Zarria Williams received the RSC Newcomer of the Year award.
All of the individual awards were determined through balloting of the league's six head coaches and presented at the meet.
A handful of the RedStorm's roster will return to action on Friday at the University of Indiana's Billy Hayes Invitational in Bloomington, Ind. for an attempt at qualifying for the NAIA national championship.
