WILMORE, Ky. - The University of Rio Grande got solid pitching performances from Osvaldo Duran and Trent Downs and a pair of two-RBI games from Dan Crozier in a doubleheader sweep of Asbury University, Friday night, in River States Conference baseball action.
The RedStorm improved to 31-17-1 overall and 22-7-1 in conference play after recording wins by scores of 6-2 and 7-3 over the Eagles at Zweifel Field.
Asbury slipped to 17-33 overall and 8-24 in the RSC with the two losses.
Duran, a junior from Guayanilla, Puerto Rico, scattered eight hits and walked one while allowing a pair of unearned runs in the opener. He also fanned seventh batters en route to his seventh win in nine decisions.
Downs, a senior from Chillicothe, Ohio, earned his ninth win in 11 decisions after allowing six hits and three runs over six innings in the nightcap. The right-hander walked two and struck out six before giving way to sophomore Zach Harvey (Kenova, WV), who closed things out with a perfect seventh inning.
Crozier, a senior from Ballston Spa, NY, delivered a two-run single in the seventh inning of the opener to help the RedStorm pull away, while also plating a pair of runs in the sixth inning of game two.
Rio Grande took a 3-0 lead in the second inning of game one thanks to a run-scoring single by freshman Eli Daniels (Minford, OH) and a two-run home run by junior Ty Warnimont (Rio Grande, OH).
Asbury sliced the deficit to 3-2 after RBI singles by Matt Cohick and Chase Martin in the home half of the fifth inning, but the RedStorm pulled away again in the seventh with a three-run rally which included Crozier's hit and junior Kam Herring (Heath, OH) being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Senior Daryin Lewis (Circleville, OH) added three hits and sophomore Juan Cruz (Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico) had a double in the win.
Cohick and Bonato had two hits each for the Eagles, while Joey Johnson started and took the loss.
In game two, Rio Grande snapped a 1-1 tie with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings before pulling away with a four-run sixth inning uprising.
Warnimont scored on a one-out wild pitch in the fourth and senior Luis Jimenez (Salinas, Puerto Rico) added a solo home run in the fifth, while the sixth inning offensive surge included the two-run single by Crozier and an RBI hit by junior Cody Blackburn (Amanda, OH).
Jimenez finished 3-for-3 in the victory, while Warnimont and senior Carlos Flores (Guayanilla, Puerto Rico) had two hits each in the win.
Chase Martin doubled and drove in two runs for Asbury, while Colton Back finished 2-for-4.
Brenden Wells started and took the loss for the Eagles.
The two teams complete their weekend series and wrap up their respective regular season schedules with another doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
