CINCINNATI, Ohio - For the second consecutive day, the University of Rio Grande beat on Cincinnati Christian pitching like a loan shark collecting on a late payment.
The RedStorm piled up 29 runs in a doubleheader sweep of the Eagles, posting a 9-1 triumph in the opener and 20-2 thrashing of their hosts in the nightcap, Saturday afternoon, in River States Conference baseball action at Western Hills High School.
Rio Grande improved to 25-15-1 overall and 17-6-1 in conference play, moving into sole possession of third place in the RSC standings. Head coach Brad Warnimont's team is 2-1/2 games behind league leader Point Park and 1-1/2 games behind second place Indiana University-Southeast.
The RedStorm led just 2-1 heading to the fourth inning of Saturday's opening game, but pulled away late by sandwiching a three-run fifth inning around two-run frames in the fourth and sixth innings.
Senior Carlos Flores (Guayanilla, Puerto Rico) went 2-for-3 with a run batted in, while sophomore Juan Cruz (Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico) also had two hits and junior Kam Herring (Heath, OH) hit a two-run home run.
Junior Ty Warnimont (Rio Grande, OH) had a two-run single in the three-run fifth, while senior Dan Crozier (Ballston Spa, NY) added an RBI double in the inning.
Senior Daryin Lewis (Circleville, OH) allowed six hits and a run over six innings, while striking out four en route to the win.
Austin Lenhardt had two hits and Micah McCrary drove in a run for CCU, while Sam Wood started and took the loss for the Eagles.
Cincinnati Christian (11-32, 4-20 RSC) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game two thanks to a one-out double by Andre Christopher and a run-scoring single by Albert, but Rio Grande rallied for three runs in the third inning to take the lead for good.
The RedStorm lowered the boom on the Eagles late, scoring 17 times over the final three innings - including six times in the fifth and nine times in the seventh.
Flores had three hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs for Rio, while senior Luis Jimenez (Salinas, Puerto Rico) went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI and Herring went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.
The RedStorm's offensive attack also included a pair of doubles and two RBI from Crozier, while Lewis had two hits and drove in two runs and senior Julio Casiano (New York, NY) had a two-run single in the nine-run seventh.
Blackburn and junior Dominic Tiberi (Dublin, OH) both doubled and drove in a run for Rio, while junior Collin Powers (Janesville, WI) got his first win in seven decisions by allowing three hits and run over five innings.
James Cathey had two hits, including a double, in a losing cause for CCU. Wyatt Jefferson started and suffered the loss for the Eagles.
Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action on Friday afternoon when it hosts Midway University at Bob Evans Field. The Eagles are currently 1/2-game behind the RedStorm in the RSC.
