CINCINNATI, Ohio - After failing to come up with a timely hit on more than one occasion in Monday's game two tie against Ohio Christian University, the University of Rio Grande flexed its offensive muscle time and again on Friday afternoon.
The RedStorm followed up a 15-1 opening game victory with a 14-3 game two rout of Cincinnati Christian University in River States Conference baseball action at Western Hills High School.
Rio Grande improved to 23-15-1 overall and 15-6-1 in conference play with the sweep.
The Eagles dropped to 11-30 overall and 4-18 in the RSC with the two losses.
Oddly enough, Friday's opening game was a scoreless contest until Rio sent 11 batters to the plate in a seven-run fourth inning. The RedStorm made it ugly by following up with a 11-batter, seven-run fifth inning.
Junior Kam Herring (Heath, OH) led the way at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double and four runs batted in, while senior Dan Crozier (Ballston Spa, NY) had two hits - including a double - and drove in three runs.
Senior Daryin Lewis (Circleville, OH) finished 2-for-3 with two RBI, while sophomore Juan Cruz (Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico) had two hits and a run batted in. Senior Carlos Flores (Guayanilla, Puerto Rico) and junior Ty Warnimont (Rio Grande, OH) each had a double in the winning effort.
Junior righty Osvaldo Duran (Guayanilla, Puerto Rico) allowed three hits and two walks, while striking out nine over six innings to get the win.
Payton Jenkins started and took the loss for CCU. Andre Christopher doubled and drove in the Eagles' lone run.
Game two saw Rio Grande score in six of its seven at bats and get all of the offense it would need with consecutive two-run innings in the first and second. The RedStorm later added four runs in both the fourth and seventh innings.
Warnimont finished 3-for-3 with an RBI, while junior Cody Blackburn (Amanda, OH) had two hits and drove in four runs. Herring and senior Luis Jimenez (Salinas, Puerto Rico) both had two hits - including a double - and an RBI, while Crozier also went 2-for-3 with a run batted in.
Cruz added two hits of his own in the winning effort and sophomore Juwan Padro (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) had an RBI double.
Senior right-hander Trent Downs (Chillicothe, OH) checked the Eagles on just two hits over five shutout innings before allowing three runs and four hits in the sixth inning. He earned his seventh win in 10 decisions.
Jared Seibert had two hits, including a double, for CCU, while Micah McCrary and Christopher had run-scoring doubles and Austin Lenhardt had an RBI single.
Clay Kramer started and suffered the loss for the Eagles.
The two teams will conclude their four-game weekend series with another doubleheader on Saturday at 2 p.m.
