WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - Mike Norris and Connor Messer posted first-place finishes, while Nikola Andjelic had a trio of top five showings to lead the University of Rio Grande men's track and field team in Saturday's University of the Cumberlands Invitational.
Norris, a sophomore from Dayton, Ohio, took top honors in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.58, while Messer - a freshman from Ashland, Ky. - was first in the pole vault with a toss covering 4.25m.
Andjelic, a sophomore from Split, Croatia, was second in the pole vault (3.80m), fifth in the javelin throw (49.64m) and fifth in the 110-meter hurdles (15.43).
Rio Grande had 11 other individuals and two relay teams post Top 10 finishes at the meet, which was not team scored.
Senior Isaac Andrews (Nelsonville, OH) finished second in the shot put with a toss of 14.32m and ninth in the hammer throw with a heave of 41.27m, while freshman Brandon Massey (Waxhaw, N.C.) was third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.08 and junior Clinton Campbell (Malta, OH) was third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.81.
Other Top 10 outings for the RedStorm included freshman Adam Champer (Malvern, OH), who was fourth in the discus throw with a toss of 42.66m; sophomore Phil Colbert (North Philadelphia, PA), who was fifth in the 800-meter run with a finish of 1:58.50; freshman Keshawn Jones (Mansfield, OH), who took sixth place in the 800 with a time of 1:59.71; freshman Joe Beegle (Racine, OH), who was seventh in the shot put with an effort covering 12.82m; Messer, who grabbed eighth place in the high jump after clearing 1.79m; and freshman Zack Collins (Newark, OH), who was eighth in the discus throw with a heave of 40.57m and 10th in the hammer throw with a toss of 41.18m.
Rio also got a second place showing from its 4x800 team - comprised of Norris, Colbert, freshman Ethan Greenawalt (Orlando, FL) and Jones - with a time of 8:03.34.
The RedStorm's 4x400 relay squad - which was made up of sophomore Daschle Facemyer (Pomeroy, OH), senior Adrian Shields (Fleming, OH), senior Aaron Evancho (Zanesville, OH) and senior Tim Warner (Pomeroy, OH) - placed eighth in a time of 3:37.18.
Two Rio Grande runners also participated in the 50th Athens Marathon on Sunday, with one earning a "B" qualifying standard for the NAIA National Championship meet and the other narrowly missing doing the same.
Sophomore Kameron Carpenter qualified for the marathon by completing the half marathon in a time of 1:14:14, which was good enough for a second place finish. Senior Dallas Guy (Buffalo, OH) finished third in a time of 1:15.41 and missed the "B" standard by 41 seconds.
Rio Grande will return to action on Friday at the Centre College Twilight Meet in Danville, Ky.
