CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio - A nine-run fifth inning rally fueled a game one win, while a five-run eighth inning rally did the same in game two as the University of Rio Grande swept a River States Conference baseball doubleheader from Ohio Christian University, Saturday afternoon, at Olson Field.
The RedStorm rolled to a 13-3 triumph in the opener, while posting a 7-2 extra-inning victory in the nightcap.
Rio Grande improved to 20-15 overall and 12-6 in the RSC with the wins.
OCU fell to 6-28 overall and 3-15 in league play as a result of the sweep.
The Trailblazers took a 2-1 lead into the fifth inning of game one thanks to a run-scoring double by Isaiah Haley and an RBI single by Tanner Holt in the bottom of the fourth, but then came the RedStorm's game-changing rally.
Rio sent 14 batters to the plate in the fifth and scored nine times, despite collecting just three hits. OCU pitchers issued four walks in the inning, while hitting four other batters and committing a balk.
The RedStorm got run-scoring singles in the inning from seniors Dan Crozier (Ballston Spa, NY), Luis Jimenez (Salinas, Puerto Rico) and Logan Walters (Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada), while senior Carlos Flores (Guayanilla, Puerto Rico) and junior Ty Warnimont (Rio Grande, OH) were both hit by pitches with the bases loaded.
Junior Kam Herring (Heath, OH) and sophomore Juan Cruz (Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico) both drew bases-loaded walks in the frame.
Walters finished 3-for-3 with two RBI, while Jimenez had two hits and the duo of Flores and Warnimont both drove in two runs.
Holt finished with two RBI in the loss for the Trailblazers. Logan Webb started and took the loss for OCU.
Senior Daryin Lewis (Circleville, OH) started and picked up the win for Rio, allowing three hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out one.
In game two, Rio Grande grabbed a 1-0 first inning lead thanks to a home run by Flores, but OCU scored twice in the second inning to take a 2-1 advantage.
The RedStorm tied the game in the third on a one-out double by Lewis and an RBI single by junior Cody Blackburn (Amanda, OH) and that's how things stayed until the eighth.
Jimenez led off with a walk, before freshman Eli Daniels (Minford, OH) and Herring both singled to load the bases. Junior Dominic Tibieri (Dublin, OH) and Cruz both had seeing-eye bloop hits to make it 4-2, before Blackburn had a sacrifice fly and Flores added a two-run single to close the scoring.
Lewis, Blackburn, Flores and Herring all had two hits in the victory, while sophomore Zach Harvey (Kenova, WV) worked the final 1-2/3 innings to earn the win.
Zach Mason drove in a run for OCU, while Jordan Girdler - the second of three pitchers for the Trailblazers - suffered the loss.
The two teams finish their series with another doubleheader on Monday afternoon. First pitch for game one is set for 2 p.m.
