ATHENS, Ohio - Connor Messer set a new school record in the pole vault to lead the University of Rio Grande men's track & field team, Saturday afternoon, at Ohio University's Cherry Blossom Invitational.
Messer, a freshman from Ashland, Ky., cleared 4.42m - or 14-06.00 - to surpass the previous school record of 14-03 set by Alan Grubb in 1978.
The RedStorm also got first place finishes from senior Isaac Andrews (Nelsonville, OH) and junior Arthur Dunkley (Akron, OH). Andrews took the top spot in the Shot Put with a toss of 13.76m, while Dunkley covered 37.94m in the Javelin Throw.
Rio also had 13 other Top 10 finishes at the meet including Andrews, who was second in the Hammer Throw with a toss of 42.48m and fifth in the Discus Throw with an effort of 36.44m; freshman Zach Collins (Newark, OH), who was third in the Discus and Hammer with throws of 37.43m and 40.10m, respectively, and sixth in the Shot with a heave of 11.15m; freshman Joe Beegle (Racine, OH), who was third in the Shot with a throw of 12.17m and sixth in the Discus with a heave of 30.23m; freshman Adam Champer (Malvern, OH), who was fourth in the Discus with an effort of 37.41m, sixth in the Hammer with a throw of 27.99m and seventh in the Shot with a toss of 10.97m; senior Issac Moss (Vinton, OH), who placed fifth in the Hammer with a toss of 33.14m; and freshman Dustin Duvall (Flatwoods, KY), who was seventh in the Discus at 29.04m and eighth in the Shot with a toss of 10.64m.
Junior Clint Campbell (Malta, OH) narrowly missed hitting the "B" qualifying standard for the NAIA national championship - by .16 to be exact - after placing 11th in the 400-meter hurdles at the VertKlasse Meeting in High Point, N.C.
Campbell was one of a handful of athletes representing the RedStorm at the meet.
Both events were not team scored.
Rio Grande returns to action next weekend at the University of the Cumberlands Invitational in Williamsburg, Ky.
