RIO GRANDE, Ohio - University of Rio Grande junior Tyanna Petty started her outdoor track & field season where she left off her indoor campaign, taking first place in the high jump at the University of Tennessee's Rust Buster Invitational in Knoxville, Tenn.
The Somerset, Ohio native covered a height of 5-07.00 to take top honors among the 22 participants in the event - 14 of whom represented NCAA Division I schools.
Petty's effort also met the "A" qualifying standard for the NAIA National Championship meet.
Petty won the national championship in the event during the indoor season.
The RedStorm had just one other Top 10 showing at the meet - sophomore Lucy Williams (Athens, OH), who placed ninth in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:56.84.
A handful of athletes representing Rio Grande also participated in the Collegiate Outdoor Open hosted by Cedarville University on Saturday.
Freshman Allison McNeal (Logan, OH) took third place in the shot put with a heave of 42-05.25, while senior Katie Roberts (Vinton, OH) finished fourth in the shot put (41-05.00) and seventh in the hammer throw (136-10).
Sophomore Taylor Monk (Ironton, OH) placed 10th in the javelin throw with a toss of 93-01.
Rio Grande is scheduled to return to action next weekend at the VertKlasse Meeting in High Point, N.C.
