HICKORY, N.C. - Blake Freed, Clinton Campbell and Kameron Carpenter all ran to first place finishes, while Connor Messer had two top three finishes to lead the University of Rio Grande men's track & field team at Saturday's Southside Power and Fitness Invitational hosted by Lenoir-Rhyne University.
Freed, a senior from Uhrichsville, Ohio, took top honors in the 3,000-Meter Steeplechase by posting a near-10 second win over senior teammate Matt Engstrom (Dover, OH). Freed finished in 10:04.92, while Engstrom crossed in 10:14.55.
Campbell, a junior from Malta, Ohio, won the 400-Meter Hurdles with a time of 57.17, while Carpenter - a sophomore from Newark, Ohio - took first in the 5,000-Meter Run after crossing in 15:52.33. Senior Dallas Guy (Buffalo, OH) finished behind Carpenter in a time of 15:52.86.
Messer, a freshman from Ashland, Ky., was third in the Pole Vault after clearing 12-11.50 and tied for third in the High Jump with an effort of 5-08.75.
The RedStorm had 11 additional Top 10 performances by individuals and one by a relay team on the day, including a second place outing by freshman Brandon Massey (Waxhaw, N.C.) in the 400-Meter Dash with a time of 49.72.
Other Top 10 finishers for Rio included senior Isaac Andrews (Nelsonville, OH), who placed third in the Shot Put with a heave covering 46-04.25 and fifth in the Hammer Throw with a toss of 132-04; sophomore Phil Colbert (North Philadelphia, PA), who was fourth in the 800-Meter Run with a time of 1:59.19; sophomore Mike Norris (Dayton, OH), who was fifth in the 800 Run with a finish of 2:00.25; senior Austin Moore (Swedesboro, NJ), who was fifth in the 400-Meter Hurdles with a time of 58.72; freshman Zack Collins (Newark, OH), who placed sixth in the Discus Throw with a toss of 120-02 and eighth in the Hammer Throw with an effort of 113-11; senior Tim Warner (Pomeroy, OH), who was eighth in the 400 Hurdles with a time of 1:03.71; freshman Keshawn Jones (Mansfield, OH), who was ninth in the 800 Run with a time of 2:01.51; and freshman Adam Champer (Malvern, OH), who was ninth in the Discus with a throw of 117-07.
The RedStorm's 4x400 relay team - comprised of Campbell, Colbert, senior Floyd Lowry (St. Paris, OH) and junior Juan Cummings (Mason, OH) - took fourth place in a time of 3:29.92.
As a team, Rio Grande finished with 95.5 points in the competition and placed third among the 11 participating schools. Host Lenoir-Rhyne topped the team standings with 136 points, while Carson-Newman finished as the runner-up with 107 points.
The RedStorm returns to action next Saturday at the University of Tennessee's RustBuster Invitational in Knoxville, Tenn.
