HICKORY, N.C. - Allison McNeal reached a national qualifying standard in the first outdoor meet of her collegiate career, while Katie Roberts had a trio of top five finishes to lead the University of Rio Grande women's track & field team at Saturday's Southside Power and Fitness Invitational hosted by Lenoir-Rhyne University.
McNeal, a freshman from Logan, Ohio, took first place in the Shot Put with a heave covering 43-00.50. The mark missed setting a new school record by 2-1/2", but did surpass the "B" qualifying standard for the NAIA National Championship meet, scheduled for May 25-27 at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium in Gulf Shores, Ala.
McNeal also finished sixth in the discus throw with an effort of 114-06.
Roberts, a senior from Vinton, Ohio, garnered second place in both the Shot Put (39-00.25) and Hammer Throw (135-09) and finished fifth in the Discus Throw with a toss of 114-09.
Junior Aubrey Dunfee (Baltimore, OH) also bettered her personal record by nearly 10 seconds with a time of 20:00.27 and a fifth place finish in the 5,000-meter run.
The RedStorm had 14 other Top 10 performances on the day, including a second place outing by junior Maddie Rigsby (Tuppers Plains, OH) who cleared 5-01.00 in the High Jump. She also placed sixth in the 400-Meter Hurdles with a time of 1:10.65.
Other Top 10 finishers for Rio included sophomore Lucy Williams (Athens, OH), who placed third in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase with a time of 12:55.67; senior Bre West (Gallipolis, OH), who was sixth in the Long Jump with an effort of 15-10.50 and 10th in the 100 Dash with a time of 13.45; sophomore Kayla Charmichael (Newark, OH), who was sixth in the 100-Meter Dash with a time of 13.01; freshman Natalie Seeberg (Urbana, OH), who was sixth in the Hammer Throw with a toss of 108-08 and 10th in the Discus Throw with a heave of 101-00; sophomore Taylor Monk (Ironton, OH), who was eighth in the Javelin Throw with a toss of 89-06; junior Andrea Hunt (Eldorado, OH), who placed eighth in the Long Jump with a leap of 15-05.50 and ninth in the 400-Meter Dash with a time of 1:04.05; junior Kylie Caudill (Pickerington, OH), who was eighth in the Triple Jump with a showing of 30-03.75; junior Emili Sannes (Carlisle, OH), who was 10th in the 800-Meter Run after crossing the finish line in 2:31.33; and senior Clarissa Johnson-Kosnich (Hillsboro, OH), who was 10th in the 400 Dash with a time of 1:05.68.
As a team, Rio Grande finished with 66 points in the competition and placed fourth among the 12 participating schools. Host Lenoir-Rhyne topped the team standings with 180 points, while Coker and Southern Wesleyan finished second and third with 123 points and 74 points, respectively.
The RedStorm returns to action next Saturday at the University of Tennessee's RustBuster Invitational in Knoxville, Tenn.
