JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - University of Rio Grande sophomore Ben Martinez already had one All-American honor in his trophy case as a standout goal keeper for the RedStorm's national champion men's soccer team in 2015.
Now, the native of Montpellier, France can add another such award to his list of athletic accomplishments.
Martinez re-wrote the Rio Grande record book for the second time in as many days and for the third time this season on Saturday, taking sixth place with a time of 1:20.40 in the Men's 600-Meter Run at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships at David E. Walker Track at Gentry Field.
The top eight finishers in the race earned All-American honors.
Martinez, who set a then-new school record time of 1:20.91 in Friday's preliminary round, shaved more than five seconds off the previous school record since the season began.
Two other athletes representing the RedStorm were a part of the national competition.
Senior Alex Nichols (Pickerington, OH) finished 14th in the Shot Put with a toss of 50'4-1/2", while freshman Brandon Massey (Waxhaw, NC) was 16th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.07.
The three points earned for the sixth-place showing by Martinez - whose qualifying time was the 20th-fastest nationally - allowed Rio Grande to be part of a 10-way tie for 47th place among the team totals.
Indiana Tech won the team title with 118 points, while Concordia (Neb.) was a distant second with 57 points and Southern-NO took third at 39 points.
