RedStorm softball wins two at Charleston

Charleston, WV --- The University of Rio Grande RedStorm softball team regained their winning ways on Tuesday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of the University of Charleston. Rio won two close encounters, edging the Golden Eagles 2-1 in game one and 1-0 in game two. 

Rio Grande (15-11) was able to gain the measure of the home team on the strength of three hits. Senior leftfielder Leah Hamman (Lexington, OH) was 1-for-2 with a triple. She scored both runs and stole two bases. Freshman third baseman Jaymie Rector (Heath, OH) was 1-for-3 and senior catcher Kaylyn Heading (Hilliard, OH) was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Sophomore hurler Anna Smith (Ross, OH) went over the break even mark on the season with the complete game victory. Smith (9-8) allowed five hits and one run with one walk and 12 strikeouts. 

In game two, Rio managed four hits and rode the outstanding pitching of sophomore Allison Mills (West Chester, OH). Mills (6-3) fired a complete game one-hitter, allowing three walks and striking out seven batters. 

Hamman again sparked the offense, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and two stolen bases. Junior shortstop Amber Bowman (Hebron, OH) was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Heading went 1-for-3 with a double.

Charleston fell to 14-17 on the season. 

Rio Grande will get back into Mid-South Conference play this weekend versus Lindsey Wilson at Stanley Evans Field. The first game on Friday is set to begin at 3 p.m. Stretch Internet will have play-by-play coverage beginning at 2:55 p.m.
