FINDLAY, Ohio - Ben Martinez set a new school record and Connor Messer tied another to highlight the University of Rio Grande men's track & field showing at Friday's Meet for Everyone hosted by Findlay University.
Martinez, a sophomore from Montpellier, France, won the 600-meter run and established a new Rio record in the event with a time of 1:22.38, eclipsing the mark of 1:23.35 that he'd set earlier this season.
The mark also met the "B" standard for the upcoming NAIA National Indoor Track & Field Championships, which are set for March 2-4 in Johnson City, Tenn.
Messer, a freshman from Ashland, Ky., equaled his previous school-best mark of 13-9.75 in the pole vault, finishing third in the event.
Nine other athletes representing the RedStorm established new personal records during the event, as did the school's 4x400 relay unit.
The PR's came from sophomore Brandon Massey (Waxhaw, N.C.), who placed second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.02; junior Clinton Campbell (Malta, OH), who was second in the 200-meter dash in 23.02 and eighth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.21; senior Austin Moore (Swedesboro, NJ), who took second behind Martinez in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:25.72; senior Blake Freed (Uhrichsville, OH), who was second in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:02.87; freshman Keshawn Jones (Mansfield, OH), who was third in the 600-meter run with a finish of 1:26.19; senior Aaron Evancho (Zanesville, OH), who was fifth in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:29.08; freshman Ethan Greenawalt (Orlando, FL), who was sixth in the 600-meter run after a finish of 1:31.96; junior Juan Cummings (Mason, OH), who was sixth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.16; and freshman River Spicer (West Milton, OH), who was 10th in the 3,000-meter run after crossing in 10:01.48.
The 4x400 team - comprised of Massey, Campbell, Cummings and Martinez - finished third in a time of 3:27.18.
Rio also got Top 10 outings from senior Dallas Guy (Buffalo, OH), who was third in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:18.72 and sophomore Daschle Facemyer (Pomeroy, OH), who was 10th in the long jump with an effort covering 5.76m.
The meet, which concluded the RedStorm's 2017 indoor schedule, was not team-scored.
