RedStorm women finish 9th at Cedarville; men 11th

Cedarville, OH --- The University of Rio Grande RedStorm women's track and field squad earned a ninth place finish at the Cedarville Collegiate Open on Saturday. The men finished 11th.

There were a total of 12 teams competing on the women's side while 15 teams made up the men's field.

The RedStorm men scored 18 points.

From a scoring standpoint, Rio Grande junior distance man Matthew Spencer(Pickerington, OH) had the best day. He finished 5th in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.04 and 6th in the 1,500 (4:07.81). He produced a total of nine points for the RedStorm. Scoring-wise, Spencer was fourth in the 1,500 because two unattached participants competed in the race.

Freshman Jay Butler (Cincinnati, OH) finished 5th in the men's long jump. His best effort was 21 feet, 4 ¾ inches. Junior Mike Green (Columbus, OH) was right behind Butler in sixth place. His best jump was 21 feet, ¾ inches.

"We had some positive performances and some negative performances," said Rio Grande head coach Bob Willey. "Most of the negatives though we can take something positive out of and build on that for future races."

"Matt ran really well, he ran two PR's (personal records), the conditions were not great," Willey added. "There were some strong teams in the field, it was a good challenge and I think we came away knowing that we have to have people step up and improve."

Rio Grande will get that opportunity, April 3 at the Oliver Nickoloff Invitational at Cincinnati.
