Rio Grande Sports Information
CINCINNATI, Ohio - Cincinnati Christian University certainly didn't look like a team mired in the midst of a five-game losing streak and playing without it's leading scorer and rebounder.
And Rio Grande, which was making its first-ever trip to CCU's Jill Rendel Court, didn't appear like a team riding a season-high four-game winning streak.
The host Eagles exploded out of the gates, connecting on 12 of 13 three-point attempts in the opening half and cruising to a 95-72 triumph over the RedStorm, Saturday afternoon, in River States Conference men's basketball action.
CCU improved to 7-16 overall and 4-7 in league play with the victory.
Rio Grande slipped 10-14 and 6-6 in the RSC with the loss.
The Eagles, who were playing without the services of Blake Walsman (18.4 ppg, 8.6 rpg) after the sophomore forward twisted an ankle in Friday night's loss to WVU-Tech, did the bulk of their damage with the backcourt duo of Kobe Brown and Khari Burton.
Brown scored a career-high 26 points, going 10-for-15 overall and 5-for-5 from three-point range, while also pulling down a career-high seven rebounds.
Burton added 24 points of his own, going 10-for-17 overall and 3-of-4 from beyond the three-point arc, while also handing out a game-high seven assists and recording two steals.
Nick Seibert added 17 points and Patrick White tossed in a career-high 15 points for CCU, which shot 66.7 percent from the floor overall (22-for-33) in the opening half and 58.7 percent (37-for-63) for the game. Jalen Robertson equaled Brown's seven rebounds and also had a game-high four blocked shots.
There were three ties and five lead changes inside the game's first 4:05, but a three-pointer by Brown with 15:42 left in the first half erased a 14-13 deficit and gave the Eagles a lead they would never relinquish.
Brown's trifecta started a 15-2 run for CCU over the next four minutes which produced a 14-point lead and Rio got no closer that 12 points the rest of the way.
The Eagles' lead ballooned to 58-30 by halftime and grew to as many as 40 points after a bucket by White made it 79-39 with 13:23 remaining in the contest.
Rio Grande, which shot a respectable 45.3 percent (29-for-64) from the floor, got no closer than the game's final margin.
Senior Corey Cruse (Fort Mitchell, Ky.) scored 17 points to lead the RedStorm in a losing cause, while redshirt freshman Stanley Christian (Norfolk, VA) added 13 points to go along with a team-best eight rebounds and three blocked shots.
Sophomore Abe Eze (Lagos, Nigeria) netted 11 points for Rio.
Rio Grande returns to action on Tuesday night, traveling to rival Shawnee State for its final non-conference game of the season. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. at the Frank & Janis Waller Gymnasium.
